more museums in and around düsseldorf

don’t miss the kunstsammlung nordrhein westfalen (art collection of the regional government), housed in two impressive venues – k20 (classic 20th century art) and k21 (work since 1980).   the collection  is extraordinary.

k20 has been closed for the last couple of years while undergoing a major expansion.   it reopened earlier this month, unfortunately, after i left.   i did visit k21…

k21 is a former parliament building, remodeled into a museum in 2002 by architect thomas mayer.

a dome covers the entire roof of the old building, creating an indoor atrium of what was a courtyard and providing a sculpture “garden” on what was the roof.   it’s a beautiful venue with impressive programming and a strong collection.

also check out haus lange und haus esters in nearby krefeld.   built in 1928 and 1930, the two residences on adjoining lots were designed by ludwig mies van der rohe.   the houses were restored and currently house temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.    the exhibitions are well done, but as i wandered through the beautifully-proportioned rooms, i couldn’t help wishing instead of looking at an exhibition there, that i lived there…
